Last month I wrote about how sweet Emma was at sixteen months. It is amazing what a difference one month makes and this month has found an Emma who has begun developing her own voice and opinion. Or, let me put it to you straight - the tantrums have started! Her tantrums can turn on and off like a light switch and sometimes I can barely contain my laughter at her antics. I realize that the humor will fade fast and that soon and very soon the tantrums will get old, but for now I find her fits hilarious. Certain triggers to her short fuse include unwanted Lucy affections, being told no, and helping her without asking for permission first. For instance, if I cut up her food without asking, "Emma, would you like me to cut up your food?" she will throw her head backwards in one swift flip and scream like I poked her with the fork. Heaven forbid I wipe her nose, take her shoes off, or comb her hair without asking for permission first.
Emma has also become an avid climber. She can climb up pretty much any vertical height in our house - the only problem is she doesn't know how to get back down. She fell from the window ledge above our couch the other day and managed to wedge herself between the wall, the couch and the end table with her arms stuck straight up over her head if you can picture it. I was so freaked out that I didn't even take a picture. She miraculously was unhurt, just upset that she was stuck. The below picture shows her favorite ladder system to get to the counter top and all the snacks we keep in the upper cupboard. She also fell from here, and wasn't so lucky.
The other day I heard Lucy yell, "This isn't going to end well!" and I came running. There was Emma dancing on top of the picnic table. She does seem to have a musical flare though. She loves dancing to music and can even carry the tune to "Hot Cross Buns", "Happy Birthday" and the song I sing her when she goes to sleep - "Emma, Emma, Mama's Baby." In the below picture she is sleeping while chewing on her finger. She is working on the last of her one year old teeth, a bottom eye tooth. Out of all of the teeth my kids have cut, hands down the eye teeth are the absolute worst. I will be so glad when this last one is through!
Emma's vocabulary and understanding continues to grow:
-When you ask Emma if she is cold, she rubs her arms.
-If Emma gets hurt she cries, "boo boo" over and over again.
-Now when Emma chokes on food she pats her stomach, mimicking how we pat her back when she chokes.
-Emma says, "The End!" when we finish reading a book.
-She has discovered her belly button and calls it a "bem bee bum tum" which I have been trying to get on video because it is so darn cute.
-The biggest new word this month though is "yeah". When you ask her a yes or no question, she now answers with "yeah" for yes. It definitely pegs her for a Michigan accent and I never realized how much we say "yeah" until Emma started parroting it back.
I will finish this post with more pictures and less words. Here is Emma below with her Uncle Johnny (he's single ladies!)...
...posing pool-side for the camera......playing on the raft in the backyard with umbrellas and her beloved container of rocks. Emma loves little rocks and is forever finding and carrying them...
...enjoying one of her favorite pastimes, throwing rocks...
...picking raspberries which she doesn't eat...
...talking to the chickens, saying "hi babies". Which reminds me - anything cute and little she calls "baby"...
...and finally, playing with her favorite stacking toy.
Ah, Emma, you are lucky you are cute! We will see if I am still laughing at the tantrums next month!

That ponytail! Adorbs! Also, Mike and I are dying over bem bee bum bo (or however it is she says it!)
I want to see my Emma baby. Ellen still picks up pictures of girls and says, "Emma. Emma."
